This body of water was known as the Poop Deck Tank. It was built below the poop deck set which was constructed on a huge hinge assembly. When tilted on the hinge, the set simulated the tilting deck of the ship as it sank. Having the tank directly below it allowed the stunt people to slide and fall down the deck, and then spill safely into the water. Later, the water was optically replaced with images of other parts of the ship.
